What we keep

  • Your Desk: a one-way fingerprint of its private key (not the key itself), when it was made and the day it was last opened.
  • Your guides: what you type. The door code and Wi-Fi password are stored encrypted.
  • Guest links: a fingerprint of each link, an encrypted copy so you can copy it again, its label and dates, how many times it was opened and the last hour it was opened.
  • Rate limits: a salted fingerprint of the network address with a daily counter, to stop abuse; deleted after two days.
  • Server logs: like any website, the web server records requests (address, time, page, browser) for a short time for security and troubleshooting. A guest link's address appears in these logs; your Desk key does not (it stays after the # sign, which browsers never send).

What we do not do

No accounts, no email addresses, no names of guests, no tracking cookies, no analytics services, no selling or sharing. Guests type nothing. The only outside service any page loads is the banner from adengine.us on four public pages, described under Advertising; it also counts one page view per page as a daily total. Your Host Desk, your guides and guest links never show an ad. Pages send no-referrer, so sites you link to (a maps link, for example) are not told which guide a guest came from.

Cookies

Two necessary cookies: one keeps your Host Desk open in this browser (until you let go of it or 400 days pass), and one protects forms against forgery. Guests get no cookies unless they open a Host Desk themselves. The banner sets none.

Advertising

The home page, How it works, Pricing and About show one banner ad from AdEngine (adengine.us), the small ad network run by WeldonPC, the company behind this site. For now the ads are for WeldonPC's own services. Your Host Desk, your guides, guest links, the printed binder, QR cards, the sample guide, this page and the terms show no ad.

To show an ad, your browser loads a script from adengine.us, asks it for one banner, loads the banner image, and reports once that the page was viewed and once that the banner was shown. Like any website, adengine.us receives your network address, your browser type and the address of this site with those requests. Pages here send no-referrer, so it is not told which page you were reading.

  • No cookies, no profile. AdEngine sets no cookies, gives you no ID and does not track you from site to site.
  • How your network address is used. adengine.us looks up the approximate city for your address in a location database kept on its own server (nothing is sent to anyone else), so that ads meant for one area are shown only there. It also uses the address to count each ad view or click only once and to leave out robots and WeldonPC's own office traffic. The address is not stored with the counts; the temporary entries made from it expire within six hours and are cleared from the server within two days.
  • What is kept. Daily totals only: page views for this site, and views and clicks for each ad. The adengine.us web server also keeps a standard access log (network address, time, address requested, browser) for security; it is deleted on a rolling schedule.
  • Clicking an ad passes through adengine.us, which counts the click, and then opens the advertiser's site, which has its own privacy policy.
  • Nothing about you is sold or shared.

Deleting

Delete a guide or your whole Desk from the Desk. Deleting is immediate; nightly database backups that still hold it are replaced within 14 days.
